Prostaglandins work by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye. Some of the side effects are a change in iris color and growth of eyelashes. Depending on the individual, one brand of this type of medication may be more effective and produce fewer sides. These drops are effective in reducing intraocular pressure in people who have open-angle glaucoma.

Side Effects:

As many as 15% of people using this drop reported a slow, gradual change in eye color due to an increased amount of brown pigment in the iris of the treated eye. The change in eye color occurs slowly and may not be noticeable for several months to years. Other side effects affecting up to 4% of patients may include stinging/burning, blurred vision, eye redness, and itching. Some patients may experience intraocular inflammation (or uveitis), or macular edema (including cystoid macular edema). Some patients may also experience abnormal vision, blepharitis, blurred vision, cataract, conjunctivitis, corneal staining, dry eyes, iris discoloration, keratisis, lid margin crusting, ocular inflammation, photophobia, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and tearing.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Nonocular Side Effects:

Nonocular side effects are reported in 1% to 5% of clinical studies, including (but not limited to) allergy, angina pectoris, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, bradycardia, bronchitis, chest pain, depression, shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, gastrointestinal disorder, headache, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, hypotension, infection, pain, prostate disorder, sinusitis, urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections.
